About Check My Setup
A free tool by an independent maker in the UK
Why this tool exists
Every time you open a website, your browser quietly hands over a surprising amount of information: the IP address you're connecting from, the network that owns it, your rough location, your screen size, your operating system, your timezone, the fonts you have installed, and more. Most people never see this data — but every site they visit does.
Check My Setup turns that one-way mirror around. It reads the same signals a website would read and lays them out in plain language, so you can see your own digital footprint the way the rest of the web sees it. That's useful for troubleshooting a VPN, confirming your IP before whitelisting it somewhere, checking whether a privacy tool is actually working, or simply understanding what "anonymous browsing" really means in practice.
What it does
- Shows your public IP (IPv4 and IPv6) and the network it belongs to.
- Maps approximate location — country, region, city, and ISP — from public network registries, never your device GPS.
- Reads your browser fingerprint — user-agent, screen resolution, language, timezone, and the other values your browser exposes to every site by default.
- Flags VPN, proxy, and datacenter IPs using public reputation lists.
- Lets you look up any IP address to see its location, ISP, ASN, and connection type.
- Generates a shareable snapshot so you can send your setup to a support agent without screenshots.
The principles behind it
Privacy by default
The detection runs in your browser. There are no analytics, no tracking pixels, and no account system. Your IP is looked up through a short-lived edge function and isn't stored. We genuinely don't know who you are — and that's the point. The full detail is in our Privacy Policy.
Honest, not alarmist
Plenty of "what is my IP" sites exist to scare you into buying a VPN. This one doesn't. Where a tool has limits — like city-level location only being right roughly half the time — we say so. The goal is understanding, not fear.
Free and fast
It's a single static page with no sign-up wall. It loads instantly, works on any device, and costs nothing. The site is supported by unobtrusive ads, which is what keeps it free for everyone.
Who built it
Check My Setup is built and maintained by Marcin Lewandowski, a product designer and builder with more than twenty years of experience across web, ecommerce, and UX. It's an independent project — not a venture-backed startup or a data broker — trading as Depthia, a sole trader registered in the United Kingdom (ICO registration ZC164548).
Alongside the tool there's a blog covering how IP geolocation works, what VPNs really hide, online privacy, and related networking topics — written to be genuinely useful rather than search-engine filler.
